Metal Signs

Aluminium composite material (ACM) combines thin aluminium faces with a composite core. It is a lightweight option for printed panels, fascias and wayfinding. ACM is router cut rather than laser cut; fine details must allow for the cutting tool.

Solid aluminium has no composite core and can suit shaped panels or cut-out signs. Thickness, finish, panel size and fixings need to be specified for the application. Compare ACM sign panels and brushed ACM panels, or send your requirements for a material recommendation.

Stainless steel can provide a brushed or polished appearance. Brass and copper create warmer metallic finishes and can develop a patina over time. A clear coating can slow tarnishing, but exposure and maintenance still affect appearance.

For a painted or powder-coated sign, provide the brand colour and intended location. Material grade, finish compatibility and any sample approval are confirmed before production; a metallic-looking panel is not the same material as solid brass or stainless steel.

For individual characters, see 3D lettering. Built-up or illuminated designs belong with fabricated 3D signs and backlit signs. Lighting adds power-supply, wiring, access and mounting requirements.

The sign size, weight, mounting surface, weather exposure and installation height determine suitable fixings. Coastal locations and exposed sites need particular attention to material grade, finish and compatible fasteners.

Supply-only and installation scopes are quoted separately. Send site photos and the postcode; difficult access, electrical connections, landlord consent or structural requirements may need further assessment before the specification and timing are confirmed.

Start with where the customer will see it. A reception plaque is read at close range; a building fascia needs to be recognised from farther away. Photograph the approach to the building as well as the mounting position, and note anything that blocks the view, such as trees, awnings or parked vehicles.

Keep the main business name or direction prominent. A phone number, opening hours and a long list of services can compete with the message that matters most. For cut-out lettering, letter height, stroke width and spacing must suit both the viewing distance and the fabrication method.

Check the contrast against the actual wall. Brushed or polished metal changes appearance with light and reflections, so a finish that looks clear on a sample may be harder to read against glass or pale stone. Share a site photo alongside your logo so these choices can be considered together.

A flat panel can sit close to a suitable wall or attach to a frame. Stand-off mounting separates the sign from the surface, creating a shadow and making individual metal letters appear more dimensional. A projecting sign presents its face to people approaching along a footpath instead of only those looking directly at the building.

These options need different hardware and support. Tell us whether the surface is masonry, cladding, glass, a fence or an existing sign frame. Include photos of the edges and the area behind the proposed position where accessible. Do not assume existing holes or brackets can carry a replacement sign simply because the dimensions match.

For illuminated signs, allow for cable routing and access to the power supply. Confirm the mounting arrangement before manufacture: adding holes or moving fixings later may affect the finish, layout and installation cost.

Vector artwork, such as an AI, EPS or suitable PDF file, helps preserve sharp outlines when a logo is enlarged or converted into cutting paths. A PDF containing a small photograph is not automatically vector artwork. If you only have a low-resolution logo, send the best original file available so artwork preparation can be assessed.

Supply the wording exactly as it should appear, including punctuation, address numbers and any directional arrows. Include brand colour references and identify which parts should be printed, painted, cut through or left as exposed metal. Very fine lines and small gaps may need adjustment for the selected material and process.

Before approving a proof, check spelling, overall dimensions, letter spacing, colour notes and the fixing positions. A screen proof helps check layout; it cannot reproduce the feel, reflectivity or grain of a physical metallic finish. Discuss a material sample when those details are central to the project.
