What is the difference between face-lit and backlit signs?

Face-lit signs transmit light through the front face toward the viewer. Backlit or halo-lit signs keep the face opaque and project light behind the letter onto the wall.

What does full-lit mean on a 3D sign?

Full-lit normally means the face and side returns both illuminate. Because the term can be used differently, specify face-and-side-lit in the artwork approval and quote.

Are side-lit and edge-lit signs the same?

They are often used for the same visible effect: light exits through the side returns or edge while the main face remains opaque. The exact build can vary with acrylic thickness and fabrication method.

What is a dual-lit sign?

Dual-lit means two illumination directions are combined. A common option is face-and-halo lighting, where the face glows and a second light output creates a halo behind the letter.

Which 3D sign lighting is brightest?

Face-lit and face-and-side-lit signs usually direct the most visible light toward the viewer. Brightness still depends on letter size, acrylic colour, LED layout, ambient light and the approved electrical design.

Does halo lighting work on every wall?

No. Halo lighting works best on an even surface that reflects light cleanly. Dark, rough, slatted, glossy or highly textured walls can narrow, scatter or interrupt the glow.

Can one sign use face light and halo light together?

Yes, when the artwork, letter depth, wiring and wall allow it. This is commonly described as face-and-halo or dual-lit construction.

Is an LED neon sign a type of illuminated 3D letter?

No. LED neon flex is a glowing tube that follows a continuous line, normally mounted to an acrylic backer. An illuminated 3D letter has a fabricated face and returns, with light exiting through the face, sides, rear or a specified combination.

What should I send to compare lighting options for my logo?

Send vector artwork, the approximate sign size, site photos, wall material, installation height, power information and one or two examples of the lighting effect you prefer.

Face-lit

Light passes through the front face. The returns normally stay opaque, so the message reads brightly and directly.

Best when: Strong legibility, shopfronts and brands that need the letters themselves to glow.
Check first: Fine strokes need enough internal space for LEDs and even diffusion.

Side-lit

The face remains opaque and light exits through translucent returns, making the depth of each letter visible.

Best when: Close viewing, deep fabricated forms and a strong dimensional edge effect.
Check first: Return depth, viewing angle and the mounting detail become more visually prominent.

Face-and-side-lit

Full-lit

Light exits through both the face and the returns, so the complete letter body appears illuminated.

Best when: Maximum brightness, colourful acrylic forms and logos seen from several angles.
Check first: Full-lit is useful buyer language; face-and-side-lit is the clearer construction description.

Combination lighting

Dual-lit combines two light directions.

A face-and-halo sign lights through the front and projects a glow behind. Other combinations are possible, including face-and-side illumination. “Dual-lit” describes the combination; the quote should still name the two directions explicitly.

The two photographs show the component effects separately. The final combination depends on stroke width, return depth, LED layout, wall reflectance and how cables can be concealed.
