When EnergySEA fitted out the 66/33kV substation at Lancaster Solar Farm in northern Victoria, the signage arrived as engineering, not decoration — two matching 222-sign sets produced to the project's signage schedule, from DANGER 66,000 VOLTS panels and arc-fault vent warnings down to Traffolyte equipment labels, each line item specifying its own mounting location.

The project in detail

Eight photographs follow the schedule through final checks on the workbench to the freight pallet bound for the solar farm.

This was a produce-and-deliver package — photography shows the finished signs at the workshop; installation on site was handled by the project's own crews.

Energy infrastructure signage is specified, not chosen — the project's schedule defines every sign type, size, quantity and mounting position. The job is to manufacture that schedule accurately, twice over.

Danger and warning families

High-voltage, live-terminal, buried-cable, battery-room and residual-voltage signs — sized per line, from 300mm panels to 1200mm site identification.

Location-coded lines

Each line carries its position: entry gates, every three fence panels or 15 metres, 33kV feeder indicators, the wall below the arc-fault release vents.

Down to the labels

Substation incomer and equipment labels in aluminium and engraved-style Traffolyte complete the schedule alongside the safety panels.

A schedule this size succeeds on discipline: one artwork setup, consistent materials across every line, and packing that arrives at a remote site intact and sorted.

    Set the artwork once

    The schedule's sign faces were set up as one artwork pass, so wording, pictograms and layout stay consistent across all nineteen line types.

    Cut, print and coat

    Panels were cut from 1.6mm aluminium with rounded corners and mounting holes, UV direct printed, then finished with a polyurethane clear coat.

  3. 3

    Label the equipment

    Incomer and device labels in aluminium and Traffolyte followed the same schedule, ready for panels, cabinets and instruments.

  4. 4

    Pack for a remote site

    The sets were wrapped, palletised and freighted interstate to the solar farm — sorted so the site crew can hang signs, not search for them.

Substation signage regulates safety around high voltage — it cannot fade, delaminate or rust. Every layer of the build answers that duty.

Material decision

Why UV-printed aluminium instead of stickers on steel?

Printed-vinyl-on-steel is the cheap path and the short-lived one — rust creeps from drilled holes and edges, and films peel in open weather. Solid aluminium with a sealed UV-printed face has no rust path at all, and the polyurethane topcoat carries the print through years of exposure a substation compound guarantees.

Rounded corners and pre-drilled holes are part of the specification — safe handling and fast mounting matter when a site crew is hanging hundreds of signs.
