Sydney project · Marine-grade regulatory signage

Sixty-four signs built to argue with salt water.

A waterfront residential wharf needs signage that regulates bikes, boards, fishing and load limits — and survives sea spray doing it. For Sydney Wharf Apartments on the Pyrmont waterfront, Platinum Signs laser-cut, printed, clear-coated and installed a five-family program of sixty-four aluminium signs across the boardwalk, poles and water's edge.

The project in detail

Eight photographs follow the program from production through installation along the wharf — with the harbour never far from the frame.

Survey markups and packing shots were excluded. The photographs show production panels and installed signs in their final positions.

Project at a glance

Five sign families, one marine specification.

Every sign in the program shares the same bones — fibre-laser-cut 2mm aluminium with a polyurethane clear coat against sea-water erosion — then each family takes the finish its job demands.

Main regulatory signs

Nineteen 1050mm × 650mm panels — UV printed, wrapped in high-visibility reflective film, backs spray-painted black.

Behavioural clusters

Thirty-nine no-fishing and no-alcohol panels in black and white colourways, reflective-laminated at 300mm × 200mm, plus four larger 750mm × 450mm panels.

Folded L-shape signs

Six pedestrian-access signs folded at 45 degrees so one panel reads from two directions along the boardwalk.

How it came together

From site survey to salt-proof signage.

Marine signage fails at the edges first — cut faces, fixings and coatings all meet weather that inland signs never see. The program was engineered for its environment from the first site walk.

Read the four delivery stages
  1. 1

    Survey the wharf

Poles, rails and sight lines were measured on site, sign by sign, so every panel and fixing suited the position it was made for.

  2. 2

    Cut and print

Panels were fibre-laser cut from 2mm aluminium, then UV printed or wrapped in high-visibility reflective film depending on the family.

  3. 3

    Coat for the sea

Every sign received a polyurethane clear coat to resist sea-water erosion, with backs spray-painted black for a finished look from every angle.

  4. 4

    Install in stages

Crews installed across three staged visits, working pole by pole along the boardwalk with marine-grade fixings.

Project anatomy

A specification written by the harbour.

Salt spray, UV and constant public contact set the spec. Each layer of the build answers one of them.

Material decision

Why laser-cut aluminium instead of printed composite?

Composite panels and vinyl-only builds are cheaper on day one, but a wharf punishes them — swollen edges, peeling film, corroded fixings. Solid 2mm aluminium with sealed, clear-coated faces keeps its edge finish in salt air, and the folded L-shape family is only possible in solid metal.

Backs were spray-painted black across the program — on a boardwalk, the back of a sign is seen as often as the front.

Budgeting a waterfront program

What drives the cost of marine-grade signage.

Waterfront programs are priced per family and per position rather than per sign alone. The main drivers are:

  • How many sign families and total positions the precinct needs
  • Reflective film versus standard print per family
  • Protective coating specification for the exposure level
  • Folded and shaped panels versus flat panels
  • Mounting hardware and staged installation on public walkways

Send your rules list and route photos for a program-specific quote — exposure and mounting conditions change scope materially between waterfronts.

Sydney proof · Marine capability

Waterfront signage that outlasts the weather.

This program was delivered for Sydney Wharf Apartments on the Pyrmont waterfront — surveyed, laser cut, printed, coated and installed by Platinum Signs, with follow-up panels supplied as the precinct's needs grew. The same marine specification suits marinas, wharves, waterfront strata and harbourside venues Australia-wide.

  • Five sign families on one shared marine spec
  • Cut, printed and coated in-house
  • Staged installation along a live public boardwalk

Prepare a useful brief

What to send for a waterfront signage program.

Marine programs are scoped from the site and the rules it must carry — both matter before any pricing.

Read the four-point quoting checklist
  1. 1

    The rules to sign

Every behaviour the precinct regulates — access, fishing, alcohol, load limits, wheeled traffic — even as a rough list.

  2. 2

    Photos along the route

Walk the wharf and photograph each position a sign might live, including the pole or surface it would fix to.

  3. 3

    Exposure notes

How close signs sit to the water, and whether the site is open harbour or sheltered.

  4. 4

    Access and timing

Public-use patterns and any body-corporate or building-management approvals installation must work around.
