Identify the place where the kit belongs

Use the sign at the storage point selected for your workplace spill kit, such as a cabinet, equipment station or nearby wall. If the kit moves around the site, make sure a fixed sign still identifies its actual home position. Avoid leaving a location sign above an empty space after equipment has been permanently moved.

Keep the location visible during normal work

Look towards the kit from the routes people normally use. Shelving, deliveries and parked equipment can hide a low label even when the kit itself remains accessible. Choose a position that keeps the wording readable without obstructing access to the equipment. This face has no directional arrow, so it is most useful where the connection to the kit is clear.

Choose a rigid face for the storage point

All three material options use the same 300 × 225 mm landscape format. Polypropylene provides a lightweight 1.6 mm panel for a wall, backing or sign holder. Colorbond gives a 0.6 mm coated steel face for mechanical fixing; allow for its weight and support. Corflute provides a lightweight 3 mm fluted panel for supported temporary placement. Measure the clear mounting space and choose a support that keeps the face readable without restricting access to the kit.

Separate the marker from spill-response decisions

A SPILL KIT sign tells people where equipment is kept. It does not identify the spilled substance, choose an absorbent or explain whether a person should approach a spill. SafeWork NSW advises having containment arrangements wherever chemicals are used, handled or stored. Select the actual equipment and response instructions through your workplace arrangements; keep those instructions available where they are needed.

Check equipment and signs together

For fuel handling and dispensing sites, NSW EPA guidance calls for visible, accessible spill kits and checks that their contents suit the products at the site. Its practical guidance also covers inspection and restocking. When you inspect the equipment location, check that the sign is still attached, readable and pointing people to the right place. Replace damaged or obscured faces and update the location marker when the storage arrangement changes.

Allow for cleaning and local exposure

A panel on a cabinet may face different conditions from one beside a loading area. Tell us about chemical contact, cleaning products, moisture or an exposed fixing position before ordering for those conditions. The standard sign does not carry a chemical-resistance or floor-graphic rating. Keep fixings clear of the words and border, and leave access to lids, handles and operating instructions.
