Put the warning at the approach to welding
Look at the routes used by other workers, contractors and visitors, including side entrances and walkways beside a bay. The warning should be visible before a person reaches the welding area. Place it on a suitable door, wall, barrier or separate support where a curtain, open door, trolley or stored material will not hide the message. Check the view with the work area arranged as it will be during welding. A second approach may need its own warning.
Keep the message relevant to the current work
WELDING IN PROGRESS describes an active condition. For temporary maintenance or changing work areas, display the warning while the activity applies, then remove or cover it when it no longer does. Avoid leaving a temporary warning at a location after the work has moved elsewhere. Where access is restricted or particular protection is required, use the appropriate additional instructions so a visitor knows what to do before entering.
Select a format for the mounting surface
The 180 × 240 mm vinyl option adheres to a smooth, flat backing such as a prepared panel. Polypropylene provides a separate lightweight rigid face. Colorbond provides a coated steel panel when mechanical fixing is preferred; allow for its weight when selecting the support. Corflute provides a lightweight fluted panel for temporary placement on a suitable backing or holder. These are sign faces, so include any required holder or support in the installation plan. Choose size from the actual approach
Measure the space available and check where the warning first comes into view. Compare the compact adhesive face with the three rigid formats, allowing space for the whole border and legend to remain visible. A larger face can give the message more presence in a busy workshop, but size alone does not establish readability at a particular distance. Lighting, the angle of approach, surrounding notices and obstructions also matter. Keep the warning separate from operating controls and other instructions.

Safe Work Australia’s welding guidance recommends warning signs alongside suitable screens, controlled entry and protective equipment for welding radiation. SafeWork NSW also describes isolation and engineering measures for welding fumes.
